Research Report on the LED industry of China and the World from 2009 to 2010

In the 1950s, RCA first found the infrared radiation of gallium arsenide in other semiconductor alloys. LED is a luminescence component made of semiconductor materials. The component has two electrode terminals. Voltage is applied between the terminals and electricity is switched on. And after the combination of electricity and hole, the remaining power is released in form of light. Different materials have different wavelengths and thus send out lights of various colors. This is the basic lighting theory of LED.

LED can only be applied in diodes that can send out visible light. The diodes that send out near-infrared radiation are called IRED. The diodes that can send out some ultraviolet radiation are called UVLED, and their emission peak wavelengths are near visible short wave length limits. But generally, the above-mentioned three semiconductor diodes are collectively called LED. According to their different encapsulations, they can be divided into Lamp LED, Display LED and SMD LED. LAMP and DISPLAY belong to the mature market and their growing space is limited.

According to their different constituents, LED wafers can be divided into binary wafers (GaP, GaAS), ternary wafers (GaAlP, GaAsP), quaternary wafers (InGaAlP) and chloride wafers (GaN). Chloride wafers mainly include blue-ray, pure green-ray and white-ray wafers. They have different materials and manufacturing procedures. That LED can be so highly valued is also because of GaN materials.

According to the manufacturing process, the LED industry can be divided into three stages: epitaxy or epiwater in the upper course, chip producing in the midstream and packing in the Downstream. There is also a manufacturer before the upper course, that is, the substrate manufacturer. It usually produces sapphire substrates. It also has carborundum substrates, which is the special esoterica of CREE. However, because it has a low output value and can be applied in RF, it is not really a member of the LED industry chain.

In the upper course, producers use single chips as substrates for epitaxy, and then employ different epitaxies (such as LPE, MOCVD and MBE) to foster multilayer and polynary thin film materials with different thicknesses. And in the midstream, according to the demands of LED structural components, producers first do evaporation and then make metal electrodes in both terminals of LED through photolithographic and heat treatment on epi wafers, and then cut them into LED crystal grains after wearing down substrates and polishing. In the Downstream, producers use packing techniques to pack crystal grains into LED products and pack them into different applicable products to be used in the applicable markets.

The global LED industries are mainly concentrated in Japan, EU and Taiwan. EU is mainly dependent on PHILIPS and OSRAM. Japan has Nichia, Toshiba, Showa Denko, Sharp, Citizen and Toyota Gosei. Only Nichia produces mainly LED. But even Nichia, it has a high rate of phosphor business. America has CREE. These areas have a very high industrial concentration of LED. The top 3 manufacturers account for over 80%, even 90% of the output values. The LED industry is comparatively scattered in Taiwan. But its top 3 manufacturers also account for nearly 40% of the output values.

Manufacturers in the mainland are most scattered and they are mainly concentrated in the Downstream. There are nearly 1,000 manufactures mainly doing the packing of LAMP with the lowest profits. Less than 5 manufacturers can do large–scale SMD packing and less than 10 manufacturers can produce large-scale outdoor LED displays. There are less than 10 manufacturers producing in the upper course and most of them produce low-end binary red/green LED. The main packing enterprises are Xiamen Hualian, Foshan Guoxing, Jiangsu Wenrun, Huizhou Huagang, Shenzhen Guangliangzi, Ningbo Hepu, Jiangxi Lianchuang, Tianjin Tianxing, Lanfang Xingu, Shenzhen Ruifeng, Shenzhen Ledman and Zhuhai Leedfull (Hongke)

There are almost 10 scaled LED producers in Chinese mainland, among which there are five listed companies dealing with LED-related business. Only in Saman, Newmargin and Silan LED business accounts for over 10%.

2006 Philadelphia Phillies Preview

The Philadelphia Phillies remained right on the Braves heels for most of the 2005 season thanks to a potent batting order that included 2nd basemen Chase Utley (.291 28 105), and outfielder’s Pat Burrell (.281 32 117) and Bobby Abreu (.286 24 102). Shortstop Jimmy Rollins (.290 12 54) and veteran catcher Mike Lieberthal (.263 12 47) also contributed to provide the Phillies with a well-balanced lineup. Perhaps the biggest offensive surprise was the emergence of rookie 1st baseman Ryan Howard (.288 22 63) who stepped in to replace the inured power hitting Jim Thome. Howard hit an impressive .298 mark after the all star break, launching 19 homeruns while playing in 67 games. His .323 batting average against righties helped keep the Phillies close and landed Howard National League Rookie of the Year. The Phillies ended the 2005 season with a respectable 88-74 record, finishing 2 games behind the Eastern Division leading Atlanta Braves. Philadelphia finished second in the National League with a team batting average of .270 (eighth in MLB).

The Phillies 2005 pitching was led by newly acquired Jon Lieber (17-13 4.20) who was picked up from the Yankees in the 2004 off season. Lieber posted only an 8-8 record prior to the all star break but rebounded nicely with a 9-5 record in the second half of the season and a 3.28 ERA. Joining Lieber in the rotation were starters Brett Myers (13-8 3.72), Randy Wolf (6-4 4.39), Vicente Padilla (9-12 4.71 and rookie pitcher Robinson Tejeda (4-3 3.57). Workhorse closer Billy Wagner (4-3 1.51 38 saves in 41 save opportunities) appeared in 75 games posting a microscopic 0.74 ERA in 36.1 innings pitched after the all star break.

Off Season Moves:

The Phillies acquired veteran reliever Arthur Rhodes (3-1 2.08) from the Indians for outfielder Jason Michaels to help their 2006 bullpen. Philadelphia also moved often injured 1st baseman Jim Thome (.207 7 30 RBI in 59 games) to make room for rookie sensation Ryan Howard. Aaron Rowand (.270 13 69) was picked up from the White Sox in the trade for Thome. Vicente Padilla was also moved for relief pitcher Ricardo Rodriguez (2-3 5.53) while starters Ryan Franklin (8-15 5.10) and journeyman reliever Tom Gordon (5-4 2.57) were acquired via free agency.

2006 Analysis:

The Phillies will enter the 2006 season with a potent lineup. Picking up Rowand in exchange for Thome will add to an already stacked batting order. Rowand is slated to replace free agent outfielder Kenny Lofton in centerfield. The Phillies will also be looking to build on Chase Utley and Ryan Howard’s breakout seasons. Abreu was included in the trade rumor mill all off-season but it appears he will be staying in Philadelphia. Abreu is a steady often-underrated competitor, playing in all 162 games last year. Expect the offense to be even better in 2006 with Howard playing a full season.

The Phillies are most concerned about their pitching. The team lost free agent closer Billy Wagner to the Mets, and reliever Terry Adams to Pittsburgh. Vincente Padilla was also traded to Texas and it appears Urbina may not be pitching at all in 2006. Lieber, Lidle and Myers should continue their 2005 form in 2006 although the 4th and 5th starters are very weak. Reliever Tom Gordon has some very big shoes to fill with the departure of Wagner. Gordon hasn’t managed to hold down the closer role since 2001 with the Chicago Cubs. Expect the Phillies lineup to dominate the NL and the top 3 pitchers to do well. The bullpen is shaky, but Philadelphia should contend for the East with a strong offensive attack.

Hannah Montana Concert Tickets Sell High

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past year you know who Hannah Montana is. Miley Cyrus, star of the Disney channel series hit, “Hannah Montana”. Miley, is the daughter of country music singer Billy Ray Cyrus, and she plays a high school student, Miley Stewart, who lives a secret double life as a famous pop star, Hannah Montana. The show is very popular, as a matter of fact, it reaches five million viewers a week.
You also know that people are going to great lengths to get her concert tickets. How great you might ask. Let me tell you.

Let’s start with this little tidbit I read about. On January 3rd, country station Y-108 held a contest of a different sort. First it was held in a mall. It was designed for dads of little girls. These dads were required to wear a blond Hannah wig, a black dress and 2-inch heels while running through the mall doing some wild things. All this to win tickets to a Hannah Montana concert!

And let’s not forget the infamous essay contest that was held. According to sources a mother/daughter duo entered the writing contest in hopes of winning the concert tickets. The essay stated that the little girl’s father died in Iraq in a roadside bombing. It was later learned that the little girl’s father did not die in Iraq, in fact he’s not a soldier. The mother stated that she and her six-year-old daughter wanted to see Hannah Montana in concert and the essay was what they did to try to win the tickets. Officials announced that that mother/daughter duo would not be receiving the grand prize.

What would prompt such behavior in grown men and women you might ask. Let me give you some background. Tickets for Hannah’s concerts have been known to sell out in as little as four minutes. That is not a misprint or a typo, four minutes. Scalpers across the nation have had a field day with this. They are getting four to five times the face value of the tickets. According to one source, a single ticket for the show in Charlotte, N.C., sold for $2,565. The original cost of the tickets…between $26 and $66.

Times have changed and technology has advanced and so we are seeing changes in the way scalpers operate. They no longer hold up tickets outside the arena. Those days are gone. Now you’ll find them behind a computer screen selling tickets online. Most states do not have restrictions on reselling tickets.

It’s been suggested ticket prices (through scalpers) may lessen as the concert date gets closer. However, scalpers will continue to be an issue as Hannah Montana concert tickets are so difficult to get and many people are willing to pay those outrageous prices to have the opportunity to attend her concert.

You may be wondering how to protect yourself from getting gauged when purchasing your concert tickets. Try to buy a ticket as quickly as possible. Though it’s not likely you will get one in the first four minutes that they go on sale, be at your phone ready to place your order. If you miss out on that, check listings on ebay and craigslist. Perhaps someone has a ticket that they cannot use for some reason. And finally, wait until close to the date of the concert and buy your ticket as cheaply as possible.
