Monday Playoff

Monday Night Football: Titans Try to Build on Streak in H-Town

2 AFC South rivals square off in unlikely circumstances. After an 0-6 start, Vince Young and Chris Johnson have helped make the Titans relevant by winning 3 straight. The Texans are actually putting together a winning season at 5-4. On Monday night, they’ll try to fend off the Titans at home as they come off their bye.

Titans on Offense

Maybe Jeff Fisher actually knew what he was doing when he came out wearing a Peyton Manning jersey during a charity event in mid-October, because Tennessee hasn’t lost since. Of course, it’s no coincidence that Vince Young was named starter when their winning streak began. Vince is winning by making smart throws, playing within himself, and adding an athletic element that defenses now have to respect. And even though the Titans’ wildcard hopes are as likely as owner Bud Adams conducting a seminar on proper owner’s box etiquette, Vince has a lot to play for. Not only does he have to continue to gain the confidence of his coaches and teammates, but he has to prove that he’s the franchise guy. What better way to do that then to destroy Houston’s playoff hopes? The NFL’s leading rusher- Chris Johnson- can help make that happen. Johnson had 25 or more touches in the Titans’ 3 wins and is a deadly target for short passes and options. Look for more production out of Kenny Britt, who is starting in place of an injured Justin Gage. The Texans have a young and energetic defense; Tennessee won’t be too successful throwing long against a secondary that features SS Bernard Pollard and rookie CB Glover Quin. Plus, Mario Williams and co. won’t let Young get comfortable in the pocket, which is when his running and option abilities will come into play.

Texans on Offense

Matt Schaub has really seized the reigns this season by bringing good decision-making and firepower to a team that lacks a running game. Schaub needs to use the services of his big target, Andre Johnson, who may be the most underrated receiver in the league. Schaub should look for Johnson, especially when guarded by an undersized Cortland Finnegan. Another weapon who can create mismatches is TE Owen Daniels, who leads the Texans in touchdowns (5) and is reliable in the redzone. Johnson and Daniels are both great after the catch, posing problems for Tennessee’s shaky secondary. And with Houston’s solid O-line (just 15 sacks allowed), Shaub should be able to stay in the pocket and find the open man. On the other hand, the Texan rush-deficiency will allow Tennessee to stack the box and blitz heavily. Guys like DE William Hayes and LB Keith Bullock will cause a ruckus everywhere for Schaub and his linemen. RBs Steve Slaton and Ryan Moats should make themselves useful by throwing a shoulder and looking out for their quarterback.

The Texans and Titans last met in Tennessee in a week 2 shootout, which ended with Matt Schaub and the Texans on top 34-31. This time around, except Vince and Chris to put on a Monday night show.
