What does red and white phosphorus have such different properties?
Two important allotropes of phosphorus are white and red. White phosphorus, P4, has a melting point of 44.1 C and spontaneously reacts with oxygen. Red phosphorus, a network solid, melts at 280 C and is stable in air. Use your knowledge or intermolecular and intramolecular bonding to explain why these two forms of the same element have such different properties?
White phosphorus, or yellow phosphorus, or simply tetraphosphorus (P4) exists as molecules made up of four atoms. The tetrahedral arrangement results in ring strain and instability. The molecule is described as consisting of six single P-P bonds. Two different crystalline forms are known. The α form, which is stable under standard conditions, has a body-centered cubic crystal structure. It transforms reversibly into the β form at 195.2 K. The β form is believed to have a hexagonal crystal structure.
Red phosphorus may be formed by heating white phosphorus to 250 °C (482°F) or by exposing white phosphorus to sunlight. Red phosphorus exists as an amorphous network. Upon further heating, the amorphous red phosphorus crystallizes. Red phosphorus does not ignite in air at temperatures below 240 °C, whereas white phosphorus ignites at about 30 °C.

The Cincinnati Bengals are struggling with numerous injuries on their team and have chosen to add linebacker Victor Hobson to their roster in order to bolster their numbers. The announcement comes at the same time that the Bengals were forced to put another player on injured reserve: safety Marvin White. As of week 13, Marvin was one of 16 Bengals players on injured reserve, including another safety, Dexter Jackson, and two linebackers, Abdul Hodge and Keith Rivers. Injuries and other problems have led to a highly disappointing season for the Bengals, who are 1-10-1 as of week 13. Victor Hobson hails from New Jersey and spent his college days playing at the University of Michigan. There, he started 39 games and played in 49, tallying 277 tackles 13 sacks, three fumble recoveries and two interceptions. His college performance led to him being selected in the second round of the 2003 draft by the New York Jets. That first year he played in every game and started one for 56 tackles, two sacks and one interception. He sat out of four games the next season because of an ankle injury, but he still started 11 games and played in 12. That year, he had 45 tackles, two passes defended and one interception. He started in every game in the 2005 season, with 80 tackles and one sack. He had 16 starts, 100 tackles, six sacks, two passes defended and one interception in 2007, the best season of his career. Hobson started in all but two games in 2007, having 62 tackles two sacks and four passes defended. He joined the patriots as a free agent before the 2008 season but was cut prior to the start of the regular season.
The Bengals picked up Marvin White in the fourth round of the 2007 draft. In his first year with the Bengals, White played in 15 games and started three. He had 20 tackles and four passes defended. He impressed coaches enough in his rookie season to have started 10 out of the 12 games in the 2008 season before being injured. During that time he had 68 tackles, four passes defended and one interception. White was injured during the game against the Baltimore Ravens on November 30 where the Bengals lost 34-3. White was put on injured reserve because of injuries to a tendon in his knee.
With a tough season almost over, the Cincinnati Bengals will soon start evaluating the performance of each player. This means that even Hobson has a chance to remain with the Bengals if he makes a big enough impact for the remaining games of the season. The Bengals finish out their season with games against the Indianapolis Colts, the Washington Redskins, the Cleveland Browns and the Kansas City Chiefs. So far, the administration for the Bengals has not made any decisions on what changes they will be making during the offseason.
